Because of the national and global shutdown caused by COVID-19 C.O.C.O.A House could not provide it's usual after school services, but that did not stop us from doing everything we could for the community.
It was terrifying but in March 2020 we formally shut down. But by the the end of March we could not stand to be away from our youth and the community. We decided we wanted to do something because we knew people were hurting and so #Pizza4thePeople campaign was born. We gave away 2800 pizzas in Partnership with Domino’s Pizza as a way to stay engaged with our community and still see our youth. We also delivered over 1000 meals as part of Schenectady County and The Schenectady Foundation Giveback Initiative.
1500 backpacks and school supplies were given out to prepare for school, High School Call in assistance line to help High Schoolers with College prep process, Applications, homework assistance or essays. Purchased and gave away IPads and accessories to youth who participated in program so that they could participate in E Mentorship program.
In May we launched the first of our E Mentorship program. We ran the E Mentorship program with 30 youth until August right before school started. In September we reopened the program with Covid protocols in place with restricted number of 10 youth and had no Union college volunteers except for a virtual component. In November due to a COVID spike we were forced to once again close program but we already had an established E Mentorship program in place so we transitioned seamlessly.
