Program Format
The following is an outline of our structured program for students, grades 3-5, attending twice weekly.
Students in grades 1, 2, 6-12 are seen by appointment, Monday-Thursday, any time between 5:30-7:00 p.m.
Fridays are reserved for enrichment activities and special events (i.e., field trips, cooking class, gardening workshop, etc.)
Monday –Thursday
A. 3:30 – 4:00 p.m. Life Skills
------------------------ (tutors arrive)
B. 4:00 - 4:30 p.m. Homework & General Studies
C. 4:30 - 5:00 p.m. Academic Skills
D. 5:00 - 5:30 p.m. Success Skills
------------------------ (students leave, tutor remains)
E. 5:30- 6:00 p.m. Assessment & Lesson Planning
A - Life Skills -- group activity
At this time, students eat a snack while the Program Director guides students in an activity or facilitates a discussion that focuses on the importance of various aspects concerning personal life. In example: fitness, hygiene, nutrition, finances, spirituality, education, awareness, work ethic, and relationships, etc.
B - Homework & General Studies -- individual activity
Students begin their assignments. If the student does not have an assignment to complete, tutors refer to student's academic profile to work on areas of high need. Tutor academically coaches and engages student in activities that address their individual needs according to grade level and state standards.
C - Academic Skills -- individual activity
Academic coaching should either continue or tutors also address the following study skills during this module: memory, critical thinking, note taking, neatness & organization, listening skills, test taking & test prep skills.
D - Success Skills -- group/indv. activity
At this time, students will be guided into an activity with their tutors that focuses on developing at least one of the following qualities:
A clear & effective communicator
A responsible & involved citizen
A collaborative & quality worker
A creative & practical problem solver
An integrative and informed thinker
A self- directed & life-long learner
E. Assessment & Lesson Planning
At this time, tutors complete written assessments on student performance, academic/success skills activities, as well as the effectiveness of the activities. Tutors then put together a lesson plan for the next session with their student.
